On November 22, 2022 several parents, EVS staff members, and members of the Vision community came together at Wagner College in Staten Island to share stories and resources. It was a terrific day and great connections were made. We would like to thank Reverend Holly Bonner (www.Blindmotherhood.com), and Wagner College for use of the space and the lovely refreshments. We were also lucky enough to hear from Kim Calvo, founder of Lauren’s Heroes, (www.Laurensheroes.org) a nonprofit organization that Kim founded after her daughter Lauren was born with a visual impairment 14 years ago.

On Saturday, October 29 at Herbert Von King Park in Brooklyn, Educational Vision Services celebrated White Cane Safety Day with our students and families totaling about 70 participants. White Cane Safety Day was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. This national observance celebrates achievements and independence of people with visual impairments and blindness. About 12 NYPD Officers, Sergeants and Captains joined us and let the students joyfully interact with their vehicles and spoke to the children about safety on public transportation and in general. Helen Keller Services and The Commission for the Blind representatives were present as well providing parents with added resources and the Long Island Bombers for Beep Baseball. Students and adults all equally enjoyed Beep Baseball in the open baseball field. We were thrilled to have NY State Attorney General, Letitia James, join us as well. She, like everyone thoroughly enjoyed this special day.
